i'm talking about how my little boy hugs my neck each night, begging me to snuggle with him. when he asks me to, i always say (kneeling next to his bed) that i'll stay until he falls asleep. luckily he's like his father and is unconscious in less than three minutes.
that's good for me because my legs fall asleep after two.
but i don't mind. his peaceful eyes...the roundness of his nose...his sweet little lips parted just so...it all just melts me.
can this be the same little monster who pushes me to my breaking point each day? relentless in his pursuit to get his own way? he, who sometimes makes me feel like his single purpose on this earth is to drive me completely batty with non-stop requests, demands and the ensuing tantrums when the answer is, "no sweetie."
yes. it's the same one.
and maybe that's really the most important lesson here. sure, us moms have an important job to do. we are supposed to cultivate these little humans into responsible, dependable, citizens who vote and pay their taxes; nourish their personalities so they don't grow up jerks, but treat others kindly and be punctual and treat even strangers with respect; nurture their faith and love of God and Jesus Christ, so that they in turn, might spend their life in service to those around them.
but let's be serious.
it's us moms who are getting the education...we are the ones truly taught. each day.
without even knowing it, he teaches me unconditional love; reveals my flaws in glaring, blaring neon orange...(which also happens to be his favorite color, minus the neon); helps me to find joy in the truly simple things; exemplifies forgiveness seamlessly; and brings me to my knees, sometimes late at night next to his bed, in thankfulness for -
him.
