philip is really good at keeping treasures from his past. he has a lot of his things from his mission, high school, etc. one treasure in particular from his mission was all of his letters to his mission president and all of his weekly calendars. he wanted to have them bound so that they could be easily read through and preserved for his posterity.
i journeyed down to charlotte, to this little custom book bindery place that has been in charlotte since the 70s. it was the coolest place. the workshop was lined wall to wall with all kinds of equipment, bolts of material, and racks of typeset. a couple of sweet little latin ladies were huddled around the sewing machines that they use to stitch the books before they are assembled. this particular bindery specializes in restoring old bibles and there were some there, in various stages of repair, that looked like they could have been from the Crusades. very cool stuff.
anyway, here are a few photos of the books. maybe you too can use the idea for a missionary you know. please excuse my obvious lack of photographic talent...but you get the idea right? :)
the blue book contains all the calendar pages. i recommend having it bound with the tough stuff - a more durable, legal-type of book cover. the letters were more like a journal and so i chose a soft, brown leather cover and just did a simple monogram on the front. they both turned out way above my expectations and philip loved them.

What a great gift!!! Just hearing about the bookbinding place gets me all excited to getting back into book binding (I sure miss all the facilities and equipment at BYU). I took bookbinding 3 times there and worked in the Special Collections (repairing old books, photos, negatives...) at the library while I was going to school.
That is awesome! All of TJ's mission stuff is in a bin in our storage room. Maybe I'll have to do the same thing for him on the sly!
