poor marissa - last week she got cast #2 - another broken arm. she was pushed down by a boy at the bus stop and broke her arm.
it was the craziest day! i was supposed to host a baby shower for my new friend casey (she's my VT companion and we team teach in sunday school - the 12/13 year-old class). i got up extra early because i had errands to run before the shower. i drove the kids to the bus stop. when i do that, we usually just hang out in the car until the bus arrives, but it was such a nice morning we decided to get out and visit with some of the other families.
dylan and i were standing by the parents and dylan was sharing some amazing facts from his new "weird but true" book.
now, if you don't know dylan well, do you remember the kid from the movie "jerry maguire"?? THAT's dylan. he's always talking fast and sharing lots of interesting information, though not always applicable to the conversation he's in. but he's so dang cute, you can't help but listen.
all of a sudden i heard a huge CRASH and spun around to see my daughter lying on the ground holding her arm. it literally sounded like she'd fallen from the sky, she hit the ground so hard.
apparently a brother and sister at our stop were playing a game where she tries to push him over and he proves just how awesome he is by not moving when she does so. mari decided to participate by saying, "ok my turn." out of nowhere, a third grader took her out. he knocked her right off her feet. she said that she had never even seen him coming.
i ran over and another parent came too to assess her situation. we had her move her arm and wiggle fingers and all that stuff. she said she was fine but she looked awful - all the color gone from her face. i told her not to get on the bus, but she said she was fine and insisted on going to school.
i ran one errand then went directly to the school. on my way there i got a call from the front office to come and get mari. when i arrived her arm was clearly broken. she didn't have noodle arm or anything, but it was very swollen and did not look good. we went to the pediatrician's office and were able to get her into an x-ray right away. afterwards, they sent us back up to the peds where they confirmed it was broken. we went right next door to an ortho and after a long wait, got her casted.
i think the photo below is the worst - ouch.
she's feeling much better now and took her x-rays with her to school on monday. she'll have the cast removed on december 27th and they'll re-x-ray and cast it again if needed.
the boy came to the bus stop today (tuesday) with a card and a gift card. he was clearly really nervous but marissa seemed to appreciate the thought. we hadn't really had any contact from the parents at that point, which was disappointing, so it was nice to see that they made an effort. the parents are never with their child at the bus stop and i kind of take issue with that. it's the assumption that the other parents will supervise your child that kind of bugs me. it's literally half a block away from their house. i'm just not willing to take chances with my kids - and even though i was barely 5 feet from my child, bad things can still happen...you just never know...
